Mostaganem, Algeria – The wilaya of Mostaganem has achieved a significant milestone in its agricultural sector, with the current season's potato harvest exceeding an impressive 2.5 million quintals. Data from the Production Organization and Technical Support department reveals that 2,546,000 quintals have been harvested from 8,489 hectares. This figure represents a substantial portion of the total cultivated area of 9,574 hectares dedicated to potatoes this agricultural campaign. The average yield stands at an impressive 300 quintals per hectare, a testament to efficient farming practices and favorable conditions.
With nearly 89% of the cultivated areas already harvested, the overall production is projected to reach 3,056,000 quintals once the remaining fields are cleared next month. This success is in line with the initial projections for the campaign.
The harvest also includes 24,400 quintals of seed potatoes cultivated across 97 hectares, further contributing to the agricultural output.
This abundant production plays a crucial role in ensuring a steady supply of potatoes to both national and regional markets, especially during periods of high demand. It has effectively guaranteed the availability of this staple food product and helped maintain stable prices for consumers.
Mostaganem is recognized as one of Algeria's primary potato-producing regions, with an annual output nearing 4 million quintals.
