National Football Team Coach Vladimir Petkovic has staunchly defended his selections and strategic decisions concerning the Algerian national football team's roster for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers and other future challenges. Addressing queries surrounding the final squad list and the notable absences of certain players, Petkovic articulated his vision and commitment to the team's success.

During the announcement of the finalized squad, the Bosnian tactician elaborated on the criteria guiding his player choices and discussed his own future with the 'Greens'. Petkovic addressed criticisms regarding the delayed press conference for the World Cup squad announcement, explaining, "I postponed announcing the squad to ensure Ziti and Maistel were fully fit. I assure you they are completely ready. We initially sent an extended list of 55 players, then narrowed it down to 35 before settling on these 26."
Petkovic firmly rejected engaging in debates about players who were not selected, emphasizing that his decisions are consistently made with the team's best interests at heart. "I am not obligated to justify the absence of players; I choose what is best for the team," he stated. He further clarified his selection philosophy: "I am not against the players who were not called up; I am for the players who were called up."
Regarding specific player choices, the coach addressed the exclusion of Mehdi Dorval and his replacement by Zinedine Ferhat, noting the availability of multiple options for the right flank. "We have Oucif and Sercine who can play on the right alongside Belkhait. We have multiple options. On the left, we have Hajem and Aït-Nouri, in addition to Benbini, who can also play on the left. We have enough players," Petkovic explained.
He also praised the recent form of Nabil Bentaleb, highlighting the significance of his return to competitive play. "We know Bentaleb very well; he possesses all the qualities the team needs. He has shown he is in good form over the past few months," Petkovic remarked.
On the subject of his future with the Algerian national team and potential contract extension, the coach expressed his satisfaction with his work with the 'Greens', confirming that negotiations are ongoing. "I am ready to discuss extending my contract because I am happy, but the process has started and is not yet complete," he revealed.
Petkovic also shed light on the decision to include four goalkeepers, despite competition rules allowing only three in the final list. "We have four goalkeepers because the allowed number in the squad does not exceed three. We chose a fourth goalkeeper because it is the only position where we can replace a player during the tournament," he clarified.
Addressing the absence of striker Baghdad Bounedjah from the squad for the trip to the United States, Petkovic stated, "Bounedjah has given a lot to the national team throughout his career. I am not against Bounedjah."
