Petković Defends Algeria Squad Choices, Discusses Future with FAF and World Cup Ambitions

Algiers, Algeria – National team coach Vladimir Petković has robustly defended his final squad selection for Algeria's upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifying matches, while also shedding light on his future with the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) and the team's ambitions on the global stage.

During a recent press conference, Petković articulated the criteria underpinning his player choices and addressed the status of several notable absentees. He also tackled criticisms regarding the delay in announcing the squad, explaining that the postponement allowed him to confirm the readiness of key players like Zinedine and Mastiel, who are now fully fit. "We initially submitted an extended list of 55 players, then narrowed it down to 35, before settling on these 26," Petković stated, emphasizing a thorough selection process.

The Bosnian tactician firmly dismissed any debates concerning players not called up, reiterating that his decisions are always made in the best interest of the collective. "I am not obliged to justify the absence of players; I choose what is best for the team. I am not against the players who were not called up, rather, I am with those who have been selected," he clarified, underscoring his philosophical approach.

Petković specifically addressed the decision to include Tougai over Mehdi Dorval, explaining the tactical depth available. "We have Tougai and Cherki who can play on the right, alongside Belaili, giving us multiple options. On the left, we have Hajjam and Ait Nouri, in addition to Ramy Bensebaini who can also operate there. We have a sufficient number of players," he elaborated.

The coach also praised the recent form of Nabil Bentaleb, highlighting his return to competitive action as crucial for the team. Hicham Boudaoui's recent concussion with Nice was acknowledged as the sole pre-match concern, which Petković confirmed has been resolved. "There is a FIFA protocol for concussions which stipulates a seven-day rest period; that period has ended, results are positive, and he will rejoin training today," he announced.

Regarding the inclusion of four local league players, Petković asserted that talent transcends origin. "For me, there is no difference between local players and those born or professional abroad. The players called up deserve to be with us," he commented. The decision to call up four goalkeepers, despite regulations permitting only three in the final roster, was explained as a strategic move to allow for a potential replacement during the tournament, a flexibility unique to that position.

Addressing his future with the Algerian national team, Petković expressed satisfaction with his current role, confirming ongoing discussions for a contract extension. "I am ready to discuss extending my contract because I am happy, but the process has started and is not yet complete," he affirmed. He also addressed the absence of striker Baghdad Bounedjah, acknowledging his significant contributions to the national team throughout his career, adding, "I am not against Bounedjah."

Looking ahead to the World Cup, Petković conveyed the team's fervent aspirations. "I promise you that we will do our utmost and strive to raise the team's name high. We have several objectives," he stated. He further emphasized their commitment to avoiding an early exit: "We will do our best to avoid playing three matches and returning home. It is crazy, but World Cup competition is tougher than before because if you exit your group, you only qualify for the Round of 16."
