Algeria Accelerates Preparations for July 2nd Legislative Elections Amidst Push for National Unity and Economic Diversification

Algeria is entering a crucial phase of its democratic process with meticulous preparations underway for the legislative elections scheduled for July 2nd. The Ministry of the Interior is spearheading these efforts, deploying central inspection commissions to various provinces to ensure optimal logistical readiness.

These oversight committees, acting under the directives of the Minister of the Interior, Local Authorities, and Transport, Saïd Sayoud, are meticulously evaluating the logistical arrangements. Their mandate includes conducting coordination meetings with local authorities and provincial representatives of the Independent National Authority for Elections (ANIE). The primary objective is to ascertain the progress of preparations and the adequacy of the logistical framework for the smooth conduct of this significant national event.

The inspection teams are also physically examining the facilities designated for electoral operations. This includes verifying the security and readiness of locations for storing electoral materials and equipment, as well as inspecting the regional offices of ANIE. The focus is on ensuring all material and logistical conditions are met to guarantee the integrity and success of the elections.

Furthermore, the ministry is actively monitoring the progress of setup and equipping of electoral venues, emphasizing the prompt resolution of any identified shortcomings. This comprehensive approach aims to establish the most conducive organizational environment for the elections.

In parallel to the electoral preparations, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has reiterated his steadfast commitment to political dialogue and national cohesion. He has consistently emphasized the importance of engaging with political parties and national personalities across the spectrum to foster a unified front and strengthen state institutions. These consultations have been instrumental in building consensus around ongoing reform processes.

President Tebboune's engagement with the national press, through periodic interviews, has established a vital channel for discussing domestic political and socioeconomic issues. He has consistently urged political parties to move beyond outdated methods, emphasizing that while they have the freedom to set their agendas, national unity and the principles of the Declaration of November 1st must remain their common denominator.

In response to the President's call for unity, political forces, civil society organizations, and diaspora representatives have shown a renewed commitment to strengthening national cohesion. Many have publicly declared their support for the President's reform agenda, underscoring their determination to safeguard the nation's security, stability, and unity.

International observers have noted Algeria's progress in consolidating public freedoms, democratic practices, and human rights, alongside an enhanced role for civil society in governance. These advancements are further bolstered by proposed amendments to laws governing political parties, associations, and local governance, aligning them with the revised Constitution.

The economic reforms initiated by President Tebboune, aimed at establishing an open and diversified economic model, have also garnered significant praise. The recently enacted investment law, which came into effect in July 2022, provides a reassuring and stimulating legal framework that ensures fair competition, equal rights and opportunities for all investors, and guarantees the protection of investments along with the repatriation of capital and profits. The law also introduces legal stability for a minimum of ten years, enhances transparency through digitalization, and establishes a one-stop shop for major projects and foreign investments. The abolition of the 51/49 rule, except for strategic sectors, is seen as a key measure to attract foreign investment and foster a more open economic environment. The establishment of the Higher Council for Import Regulation signifies a strong intent to curb unhealthy practices that have previously tarnished the nation's economic image and performance.
