Tizi Ouzou, Algeria – Local authorities have clarified recent restrictions on forest access, assuring the public that popular tourist sites and known hiking trails in the Tizi Ouzou province remain open to visitors. The clarification comes after a new decree by the wali (governor) initially led to widespread misunderstanding, with many fearing a blanket ban on outdoor activities.
Tizi Ouzou forest access clarification
Moussa Haddad, the Conservator of Forests for the Tizi Ouzou wilaya, stated that the prohibition specifically targets “highly sensitive” forest perimeters, particularly those at high risk of wildfires during the hot summer months. These restrictions are in effect from May 1st to October 31st, 2026.
"There has never been any question of prohibiting hiking," Haddad emphasized in a statement to Le Jour d’Algérie. He stressed that these natural spaces are public and accessible to citizens, provided they adhere to safety regulations and legal measures. He noted that hikers, often knowledgeable about the terrain and passionate about environmental protection, are considered partners in conservation efforts.
The sensitive areas identified are typically forests like holm oak, which are highly susceptible to fires. A detailed map of these perimeters has been established by the relevant services to guide field operations. This measure is part of a broader strategy for wildfire prevention and combat.
Haddad urged visitors to stay on marked trails and comply with regulations regarding camping, barbecues, and other activities that could spark fires. He highlighted that hikers often play a crucial role in rescue and relief operations within these zones.
This clarification has been met with relief from hiking enthusiasts, who expressed their understanding and willingness to cooperate with forest services on social media platforms. Many groups have pledged their support for prevention and protection initiatives for these vital natural areas.
