Algeria Achieves Significant Gains in Water Security Through Desalination and Technological Innovation

Algeria has made substantial strides in bolstering its water security, particularly through the strategic expansion of seawater desalination and the optimization of traditional water resources. This progress aligns with the national program championed by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, aimed at reinforcing the country's capacity to meet its water needs.

Minister of Water Resources, Lunis Bouzguza, highlighted these achievements during the opening of the 21st edition of the International Exhibition for Water and Environment Equipment, Technologies, and Services (SIbewatec). He announced the upcoming construction of three new desalination plants in the western regions of Tlemcen, Chlef, and Mostaganem. Each plant is projected to have a production capacity of 300,000 cubic meters per day, significantly enhancing the supply of desalinated water, even to inland provinces such as El Bayadh, Tiaret, Saida, and Naama.

Currently, Algeria operates 19 desalination units with considerable production capacity. These facilities supply 16 northern provinces and, as a first phase, three inland provinces: Blida, Bouira, and Sidi Bel Abbès, with desalinated seawater.

Furthermore, the southern regions of Algeria are now experiencing water abundance, attributed to enhanced groundwater exploitation supported by demineralization stations in Tindouf and Tamanrasset. Major water transfer networks also ensure that provinces historically facing shortages can now meet their vital water requirements.

The Algerian Company for Water Desalination, a subsidiary of Sonatrach, plays a crucial role in national water security. The Minister commended the company's contributions to ensuring a sustainable water supply.

In a move towards digital transformation, ALGERIAN WATER and Sanitation Company (SEAAL) launched its AI-powered application, "Qatrat AI." This innovative tool is designed for the digital management of water networks, aiming to boost distribution efficiency, identify network faults, and detect leaks, thereby guaranteeing service continuity.

The SIbewatec exhibition, running until June 4th, features 170 exhibitors from 16 countries. It serves as a vital platform for knowledge exchange and showcasing the latest technological advancements in water management and environmental protection.
