Under the directive of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Algeria's diplomacy has intensified its activities across regional and international platforms. Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, recently participated in Seoul in the Africa-Republic of Korea Partnership Ministerial Meeting. During the meeting, he underscored Algeria's steadfast commitment to bolstering its strategic partnership with the Republic of Korea, celebrating the 20th anniversary of its signing this year.
Algerian diplomacy active international stage
Minister Attaf highlighted Algeria's pride in this "privileged and unique strategic partnership," viewing it as a catalyst for the broader Africa-Korea partnership. He pointed to initiatives like the establishment of the African Center for Information and Communication Technology and Advanced Technologies as projects with continental significance. Algeria's engagement extends to actively contributing to the diversification and expansion of the Africa-Korea partnership, which Attaf described as demonstrating "satisfaction and ambition." He lauded tangible progress made since the 2024 summit and expressed a desire for further achievements that benefit both African and Korean parties.
The Minister outlined three key aspects of this partnership. Firstly, he noted the convergence between Africa-Korea cooperation goals and the African Union's Agenda 2063 development priorities. Secondly, he appreciated Korea's pragmatic approach, exemplified by cooperation programs in vital areas such as intra-African trade, infrastructure, agriculture, industry, modern technologies, digitalization, and innovation. Thirdly, Attaf expressed Algeria's ambition for the Afro-Korean partnership to help Africa integrate into global technological revolutions, including artificial intelligence, digital technologies, robotics, nanotechnology, and renewable energy. He stressed the critical need for Africa to actively participate in these advancements, avoiding the marginalization experienced during past industrial and information revolutions.
Furthermore, in line with presidential directives, Algeria has been actively championing just causes and mediating conflicts worldwide. This includes significant efforts concerning Palestine, Sudan, Yemen, Lebanon, Libya, Syria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, and Colombia. Algeria has convened numerous emergency meetings, particularly on the situation in Gaza, the challenges facing UNRWA, and the plight of children in the Palestinian enclave, aiming to alleviate distress and restore hope.
Algeria's diplomatic interventions in Libya have yielded an "historic agreement" enabling the Libyan Investment Authority to reinvest frozen assets and mandating the Sanctions Committee to inform Libyan authorities of all correspondence regarding these assets. For Syria, Yemen, Sudan, and Lebanon, Algeria has advocated for supporting political processes initiated by the peoples of these nations, urging an end to foreign interference.
In its role as a respected global player, Algeria has initiated crucial meetings on issues pertinent to Africa and the Arab world, including the fight against terrorism and the reform of the international system. A high-level UN Security Council meeting on combating terrorism in Africa, chaired by Minister Attaf, focused on Algeria's comprehensive approach addressing both the manifestations and root causes of terrorism, alongside development and security aspects. African ministers unanimously praised Algeria's strategy and President Tebboune's role in fostering continental efforts.
Discussions on strengthening cooperation between the Arab League and the UN highlighted the urgency of consolidating joint diplomatic action for regional peace and prosperity. The meeting emphasized that excluding such cooperation from regional peace equations exacerbates tensions and that a complementary relationship between international bodies is vital for multilateralism.
Algeria has also strongly advocated for the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination and independence. Despite external pressures and diplomatic maneuvering, Algeria has consistently supported the Sahrawi cause. During its term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Algeria actively worked to keep the Sahrawi issue prominent. It successfully pushed for crucial amendments to UN Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025), reaffirming the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination and ensuring a more balanced text that upholds international law and prior resolutions, countering attempts to favor alternative solutions.
Minister Attaf reiterated that the adopted resolution preserves the fundamental elements for resolving the Western Sahara issue, emphasizing that the matter remains under UN consideration. Through its principled stance, Algeria reaffirms its unwavering commitment to defending just causes, notably the Palestinian and Sahrawi issues, on the international stage.
