Algeria and Niger have solidified their energy sector collaboration with the signing of three pivotal Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between subsidiaries of Algeria's state-owned Sonatrach and Niger's national oil company, SONIDEP.
Algeria Niger energy cooperation MoUs
The signing ceremony, held at Sonatrach's headquarters, was overseen by Algeria's Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, and Niger's Minister of Petroleum, Hamanni Tini. This significant event underscores the shared commitment to strengthening South-South cooperation and fostering strategic partnerships between the two nations.
The MoUs cover critical areas within the hydrocarbon industry. The first agreement, between Sonatrach's geophysical services subsidiary, ENAGEO, and SONIDEP, focuses on acquiring and processing seismic data in Niger, aimed at bolstering exploration efforts and developing the country's oil and gas resources. This initiative is set to enhance understanding and utilization of Niger's subterranean energy potential.
The second MoU, established between Sonatrach's drilling subsidiary, ENFOR, and SONIDEP, outlines the creation of a joint venture dedicated to executing oil and gas drilling operations within Niger. This venture is poised to significantly boost the technical and operational capacities of both entities, thereby advancing the mining and petroleum sectors in Niger.
The third agreement involves Sonatrach's fuel distribution arm, NAFTAL Algeria, and SONIDEP. It details enhanced cooperation in the distribution of petroleum products in Niger, including the establishment of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) filling stations and comprehensive training programs. Furthermore, this MoU includes the formation of a joint venture for the manufacturing, formulation, storage, and distribution of bitumen, crucial for supporting infrastructure development and economic growth in Niger.
Both parties emphasized that these agreements represent a new phase in Algerian-Nigerien energy partnership, reflecting a mutual desire to expand areas of cooperation and investment. They highlighted Algeria's recognized expertise across the entire oil and gas value chain as a key asset in these collaborations.
These accords are a direct implementation of a prior MoU between Sonatrach and SONIDEP, geared towards developing mutually beneficial joint projects, facilitating technology transfer, and building capacity. The initiatives are expected to support economic development and reinforce the principles of African cooperation and solidarity.
