Algerian political parties and independent lists are anxiously awaiting the outcome of the next 24 hours regarding validated electoral lists at the provincial level. Concerns are mounting over potential loss of representation in several constituencies following the rejection of numerous candidates and the exhaustion of all appeals mechanisms.
Algerian election lists
The coming hours appear decisive for political parties, particularly those at risk of losing entire lists in certain provinces due to failing to meet the required legal quorum after disqualifications.
While most political formations have prepared for this scenario by compiling substitute lists with reserve names, the room for maneuver remains limited in some areas. This situation could lead to the definitive collapse of their lists if the replacement candidates are not accepted. These fears are particularly acute for major parties, for whom the loss of a complete electoral list represents a significant and currently unrecoverable political setback.
This predicament has compelled parties to expand their reserve pool and develop a "contingency plan" to ward off any last-minute surprises. In Algiers province, for example, where lists are competing for 38 seats, the National Liberation Front (FLN) and other formations like the Rally for Culture and Democracy (RCD), Hamas Movement, and independent lists are rushing to replace their rejected candidates. Preliminary data suggests the FLN has had 14 candidates disqualified, while the law requires a minimum of 31 names on a list. This places the party under immense pressure to activate its replacement mechanism and avoid any shortfall that could jeopardize its legal standing.
This situation unfolds as the Independent National Electoral Authority (ANIE) has set June 6th at midnight as the final deadline for submitting replacement candidate files and new nominations. The authority, led by Karim Khaled, has begun finalizing procedures for arranging candidates on the lists for the upcoming election of National People's Assembly members, scheduled for July 2, 2026.
According to a statement from the ANIE, in accordance with Presidential Decree No. 26-145 of April 4, 2026, which convenes the electorate for the National People's Assembly elections on Thursday, July 2, 2026, and adhering to Article 176 of Law No. 21-01 of March 10, 2021, concerning the organic law on the electoral system, the ANIE calls upon party-backed candidate lists and independent lists that have been notified of their candidacy acceptance to approach their provincial or regional coordinators within the relevant electoral districts.
The statement further explains that this measure aims to facilitate the submission of a signed document by the political party or independent list candidates, detailing the final order of candidates within the list. This ensures that all required information and documents are complete for the preparation of ballot papers for the elections on July 2, 2026.
The ANIE reiterated that the final deadline for submitting new nominations is Saturday, June 6, 2026, at midnight (00:00), urging all concerned parties to complete the required procedures within the stipulated legal timeframe.
