Speaking at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ban Ki-moon delivered a lecture titled "Strengthening Green Growth Partnerships: Addressing the Sustainability Crisis and Bolstering International Cooperation on Climate Change." He noted that Algeria, as a respected diplomatic actor and a bridge between Africa, the Arab world, and the Mediterranean region, is strategically positioned to significantly contribute to sustainable development efforts.

"Algeria is in a distinguished strategic position to foster dialogue and collective action on climate and sustainable development issues, which have transcended environmental concerns to become economic, developmental, and global security matters impacting all aspects of life and all segments of society," Ban stated. He praised Algeria's environmental policies aimed at achieving sustainable development goals and promoting a green economy, acknowledging its diligent work with international organizations like the UN amidst challenges such as climate change and biodiversity loss.

The inauguration of the GGGI office in Algiers was also a focal point, expected to enhance efforts in coordinating development initiatives. Lounès Maghramane, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reiterated Algeria's commitment to sustainable development and green growth, noting their prominence on the global diplomatic agenda. He highlighted Algeria's integrated vision for sustainable development, respecting environmental standards and national sovereignty, and pointed to national projects in solar energy and green hydrogen, underscoring the importance of partnerships.

Ban Ki-moon's visit included a meeting with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who awarded him the "Achir" rank medal for his efforts during his tenure at the UN. Algeria is set to join the GGGI, established in 2012, by mid-2025. The institute, headquartered in Seoul, aims to bolster the technical capacities of member states in green growth and sustainability.
