Algerian Army Thwarts Major Drug Smuggling Attempt from Morocco

Algerian security forces have successfully intercepted a significant drug smuggling operation, seizing 921 kilograms of processed cannabis intended for entry from Morocco. The operation, part of broader efforts to combat illicit trafficking, also led to the confiscation of over 900,000 psychotropic pills across various military regions.

According to the weekly operational report from the People's National Army spanning June 10 to June 17, 2026, the forces apprehended 40 drug traffickers during anti-smuggling efforts along the Moroccan border. In addition to the substantial cannabis seizure, 901,607 hallucinogenic tablets were discovered during separate operations.

Further operations across military zones, particularly in Tamanrasset, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, Illizi, In Salah, and In Guezzam, resulted in the arrest of 531 individuals. Authorities also impounded 32 vehicles, 364 electricity generators, and 159 pressure hammers. Quantities of raw gold mixtures, stones, and equipment used in illegal gold prospecting were also seized, underscoring the diverse range of illicit activities being targeted.

In a series of distinct operations, military units detained 11 additional individuals, confiscating two submachine guns, an automatic pistol, three hunting rifles, 15,920 liters of fuel, and three tons of foodstuffs destined for smuggling.

Meanwhile, national coast guards actively prevented illegal migration attempts along Algeria's coastline, rescuing 96 individuals found on rudimentary boats. Across the country, 574 irregular migrants of various nationalities were apprehended, highlighting ongoing challenges with transnational crime and illegal immigration.
