Spanish PM Sánchez Denounces Migration Surge as “Violation of Territorial Integrity”
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated on Friday from the city of Ceuta that the massive influx of irregular migrants arriving from Morocco over the past 24 hours constitutes a “violation of Spain’s territorial integrity.” He stressed that the government would take all necessary measures to regain control of the situation and ensure border security.
According to Spanish media reports, Sánchez made these remarks during an on-site visit to Ceuta to assess the rapidly evolving crisis. This came as Spain’s Ministry of the Interior estimated that around 49,000 migrants had crossed into the city from Morocco within just one day, placing significant pressure on Spanish authorities amid a sharp rise in irregular migration.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed that the Spanish government is fully committed to safeguarding Ceuta, emphasizing that the city is an integral part of Spain. He noted that all available resources would be mobilized to guarantee the safety of the city and reassure both residents and citizens.
“Ceuta’s security, as part of our nation, and the safety and peace of mind of our citizens and residents are guaranteed by the actions of the Spanish government, regardless of the circumstances and using all available means,” Sánchez said.
He also blamed human trafficking networks for fueling the surge, arguing that they have exploited the current situation to push thousands of migrants toward the Spanish enclave.
Additionally, Sánchez linked the rise in crossing attempts to what he described as a “misleading interpretation” by smuggling networks of a recent Spanish Supreme Court ruling. The decision, issued three weeks ago, prohibits immediate deportation of migrants who reach Ceuta and Melilla by swimming, while allowing such measures for those attempting to cross border fences.
