Mali Announces Return of Its Ambassador to Algeria and Reopens Airspace

Mali’s transitional government announced on Friday the return of its ambassador to Algeria and the resumption of his diplomatic duties in Algiers, in a move that signals a new step toward restoring relations between the two neighboring countries.

In a statement, the Malian transitional government said the decision was taken as part of efforts to give new momentum to the relations of cooperation and friendship between the Republic of Mali and the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria.

The statement confirmed that Mali’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Algeria would return to Algiers to resume his official mission. This decision comes after a period of diplomatic tension between the two countries.

Mali also announced the reopening of its airspace to all civilian and military aircraft operating flights from Algeria or heading toward Algeria. This measure marks an important practical step in easing restrictions that had affected air traffic between the two countries.

The decision by Bamako follows a similar announcement made earlier by Algeria, which confirmed the full reopening of its national airspace to Malian air traffic. This came after more than 15 months of closure.

The reciprocal reopening of airspace and the return of ambassadors reflect a shared willingness to restore dialogue and bring bilateral relations back to a more normal path.

Relations between Algeria and Mali are important not only for the two countries, but also for the wider Sahel region, where security, stability and cooperation remain key priorities.

Through these latest decisions, both sides appear to be moving toward a gradual normalization of ties based on diplomatic engagement, mutual respect and the need to preserve regional cooperation.
