President Tebboune’s Germany Visit Draws Wide International Media Attention
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s official visit to Germany attracted extensive international media coverage, with several outlets highlighting the new momentum in relations between Algiers and Berlin and the emergence of a stronger strategic partnership.
Much of the coverage focused on energy cooperation, particularly natural gas, green hydrogen and the proposed Southern Hydrogen Corridor linking Algeria to Germany through Tunisia, Italy and Austria. German media presented energy security and economic cooperation as central priorities of the presidential visit.
President Tebboune’s meetings with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Friedrich Merz reflected the two countries’ determination to strengthen bilateral relations. The German Chancellery confirmed that discussions focused on economic cooperation, energy and raw materials.
International reports described Algeria as an increasingly important partner for Germany as Berlin seeks reliable energy suppliers and develops low-carbon solutions. Al Jazeera noted that the visit went beyond conventional gas cooperation, with discussions also covering green hydrogen, raw materials and broader industrial opportunities.
The visit also produced tangible economic results. The Algerian-German Economic Forum brought together officials, investors and business leaders and covered strategic areas including hydrocarbons, renewable energy, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and advanced technologies.
One of the most significant announcements concerned Opel’s industrial plans in Algeria. Opel Automobile and AGM Holding signed a memorandum of understanding to localise the German manufacturer’s first engine production project in the country.
Stellantis confirmed that the initiative forms part of a broader plan to establish local Opel vehicle production. The project is expected to strengthen Algeria’s automotive ecosystem, expand domestic production capacity and support the transfer of industrial expertise.
The international attention devoted to the visit reflects Algeria’s growing economic and diplomatic importance. Under President Tebboune’s leadership, the country is pursuing partnerships based on investment, local production, technology transfer and mutual benefit.
The Berlin agreements also demonstrate the success of Algeria’s strategy of diversifying its economy while preserving its position as a reliable energy partner.
Beyond the energy sector, the visit opened new prospects for cooperation in industry, technology and manufacturing.
