Pedro Sánchez: Algeria Is a Strategic Partner and Trusted Friend of Spain

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has described Algeria as a “strategic partner and friendly country,” emphasizing the determination of both nations to open a new and promising chapter in their bilateral relations.

Speaking in Algiers alongside President Abdelmadjid Tebboune following expanded talks between the two delegations, Sánchez said his working and friendship visit reflected a firm commitment to deepening ties and developing forward-looking cooperation.

He noted that Algeria and Spain are linked by a Treaty of Friendship and Good Neighbourliness, stressing that stronger political dialogue is the foundation for progress in every other area. Preparations are already underway for the eighth High-Level Meeting, scheduled for next autumn, which is expected to strengthen cooperation in security, the fight against irregular migration and cultural exchange.

On the economic front, Sánchez described Algeria as a reliable partner. He recalled that Algeria became Spain’s leading natural gas supplier in 2020, while underlining that bilateral relations extend far beyond energy. He expressed Spain’s interest in working with Algeria on energy transition, innovation, digitalization and modern infrastructure.

The Spanish leader also thanked President Tebboune for choosing Spain as the guest of honour at the Algiers International Fair. He said Madrid aims to establish a mutually beneficial partnership and support Algeria’s modernization and industrial development.

Addressing international affairs, Sánchez highlighted the strategic convergence between the two countries, describing Algeria and Spain as a bridge connecting Africa and Europe. He praised Algeria’s role as a gateway to Africa and a key contributor to stability in the Sahel, while Spain provides an important route toward Europe.

Sánchez concluded that Algeria’s geographic position, African and Mediterranean identity and exceptional geostrategic importance make it a central partner for Spain. He said this partnership would serve both peoples. He reaffirmed that Algeria can count on Spain and pledged to continue close cooperation.
