Algeria’s Ammar Ben Jamaâ Unanimously Elected President of UN ECOSOC for 2027

Algeria scored a fresh diplomatic victory at the United Nations this week after Ambassador Ammar Ben Jamaâ, the country’s Permanent Representative in New York, was elected by acclamation to head the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2027 session.

Ben Jamaâ’s election, carried out by consensus among all member states, places Algeria at the helm of the organisation’s central platform for development, human-rights and economic debate. ECOSOC oversees a broad portfolio that ranges from advancing the Sustainable Development Goals to coordinating humanitarian action, giving its presidency both visibility and real influence in setting the global agenda.

Moments after the vote, delegations from across regional groups—whether or not they currently sit on the Council—took the floor to congratulate the Algerian diplomat. Many praised the “well-deserved” choice and pledged “full support” for his forthcoming presidency. They voiced confidence that Ben Jamaâ’s experience and Algeria’s longstanding commitment to multilateralism would steer ECOSOC’s work effectively during a period expected to be marked by fiscal tightening, climate-related shocks and widening inequalities.
