Algeria Champions Intellectual Security to Combat Sahel Extremism
Algeria is actively championing the promotion of "intellectual security" among the youth of the Sahel region, a critical initiative designed to counteract the spread of extremist ideologies. Lakhmisi Bezzaz, Secretary-General of the League of Scholars, Preachers, and Imams of the Sahel, affirmed the League's commitment to this endeavor. This approach directly addresses the influence of approximately 60 terrorist groups operating in the Sahel, which often exploit the region's social, economic, and cultural fragilities to recruit young people into their ranks. The League of Sahel Scholars plays a vital role in fostering awareness and disseminating intellectual security to immunize young individuals against radical discourse, who are frequently targeted by criminal organizations for their nefarious schemes.
Beyond intellectual safeguards, Algeria's People's National Army (ANP) demonstrates formidable capabilities essential for regional peace. Bezzaz cited the ANP's successful reception of a German national, previously abducted by a criminal group in Niger, as clear evidence of its readiness and a strong message to extremist factions. He underscored this operation as definitive proof of Algeria's role as a fundamental factor of stability across the entire region. This achievement is part of the ANP's ongoing, distinguished efforts to enhance peace and stability, consistently carrying out specialized operations to confront the persistent phenomenon of violent extremism in the African Sahel.
