Revamping Ports: Algeria’s Path to a New Economy

dzwatch

Algeria is experiencing a significant shift in the development of its transport and logistics systems, with a particular focus on maritime transport. The country’s leadership views it as a crucial driver for diversifying the national economy and boosting non-hydrocarbon exports.

This strategy was emphasized by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune during a cabinet meeting last Sunday. He instructed the government to develop a comprehensive new port management strategy to be presented at the cabinet meeting as soon as possible.

President Tebboune also directed the Minister of Transport to exercise greater caution and vigilance against any form of manipulation, particularly the delays in container inspections. He stressed the importance of adhering to cargo unloading schedules by enhancing monitoring capacities and systems, which will free up dry port spaces.

Essential Development of the Transport and Logistics System

Dr. Rachid Haj Hani, an expert in international freight and logistics, underscored the importance of developing the transport and logistics system, describing it as the “lifeline” of the national economy.

In a phone call with “Sabq Press,” Haj Hani noted significant developments in international freight transport and urged authorities to keep pace, especially by integrating technology and training human resources. He highlighted that President Tebboune issued strict instructions to the Minister of Transport during the recent cabinet meeting, emphasizing container monitoring and reducing inspection delays.

Haj Hani stated that this goal can only be achieved by making it a top priority and incorporating advanced and intelligent systems to put an end to outdated port management policies. He added, “Focusing on ports is a necessity, and this sector needs the required equipment and specialized devices, without neglecting continuous human resource training.”

The economic expert pointed out that maritime transport is cost-effective compared to air transport, particularly since it can handle large quantities of goods. Haj Hani called for the development of major ports to alleviate the congestion of some large ships that wait for extended periods. He remarked that “time is a critical factor in the transport and logistics sector” and stressed the need to address this issue.

He also proposed establishing an institute to modernize the transport sector, suggesting that “such institutes will undoubtedly benefit the sector, especially with the significant advancements seen internationally.”

Haj Hani concluded that Algeria is on its way to diversifying its economy and increasing non-hydrocarbon exports. This can only be achieved by developing the transport and logistics sector, particularly maritime transport, and expanding ports and harbors.
