5G and Data Growth Drive Algerian Telecom AI Investment
Algeria's telecommunications sector is undergoing a rapid transformation, with operators increasingly integrating artificial intelligence (AI) to optimize and modernize their networks. This strategic shift is primarily driven by the continuous growth in data consumption and the progressive deployment of 5G technology across the country. The adoption of AI is central to enhancing service quality, anticipating potential network breakdowns, and tailoring offerings to better meet the evolving needs of subscribers, thereby marking a new phase in network management.
The impetus for this technological advancement is underscored by compelling data consumption figures. According to the Regulatory Authority for Post and Electronic Communications (ARPCE), mobile internet subscriptions reached 55.94 million by the third quarter of 2025, with more than 50 million of these connections utilizing 4G networks. During the same period, data consumption surpassed 1.63 billion gigabits. Furthermore, the average monthly data consumption per subscriber saw a notable increase from 8.72 gigabits in the third quarter of 2024 to 10.13 gigabits in the third quarter of 2025. This significant rise in demand compels operators to bolster their AI capabilities, particularly for predictive maintenance, efficient resource management, and personalized service delivery.
Recognizing the strategic importance of specialized expertise, Algerian telecom operators are actively forging partnerships with universities and research centers, including the National Higher School of Artificial Intelligence (ENSIA). These collaborations encompass applied research, graduation projects, training programs, and organizing activities focused on AI, 5G, data science, and cybersecurity. A significant milestone was achieved in June 2026 with the graduation of ENSIA's first cohort of engineers, signaling Algeria's growing indigenous capacity in this critical field. As 5G technology and the Internet of Things continue to expand, AI is poised to become an indispensable catalyst for telecommunications modernization, promising substantial improvements in digital service quality and fostering the development of the digital economy.
