Germany, Algeria Deepen Cooperation in Energy, Industry, Transport

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul undertook a diplomatic visit to Algeria, where he met with Ahmed Attaf, Algeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs. The visit aimed to strengthen strategic cooperation and energy partnership between the two nations, with Germany viewing Algeria as a key partner for regional stability and European energy security. Discussions reviewed the current state of friendship and cooperation, exploring avenues to expand and reinforce bilateral relations.

The two ministers emphasized the importance of implementing recommendations from the "Joint Declaration on the Agenda for Strategic Partnership," which was established during Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's state visit to Berlin on July 16 and 17, 2026. During that visit, President Tebboune met German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Both sides agreed to take practical steps to further promote bilateral economic cooperation, highlighting the need to capitalize on available investment opportunities and potential partnerships.

Priority economic sectors for increased cooperation included energy, renewable energy, energy transition, industry, transport, and pharmaceuticals, with a specific focus on green hydrogen. The officials also stressed the activation of existing cooperation mechanisms, the strengthening of the legal framework, and increased engagement between business communities. This approach is intended to ensure the effective implementation of agreements and partnership projects that originated from the Algeria-Germany Economic Forum held on July 17. The ministers further discussed regional and global issues of mutual interest, such as the situation in the Middle East, developments in the Sahel region, and prospects for Euro-Mediterranean partnership.
