European Companies See Algeria as Key Energy Transition Partner

Algeria is emerging as one of the Mediterranean's most attractive investment destinations, particularly for European companies engaged in the energy transition. This assessment, detailed in the 'Investment Guide to Algeria' recently published by the Algerian-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry, highlights the nation's significant potential. As a major producer of oil and gas, Algeria is also recognized as a key supplier of raw materials for countries like Germany.

The guide identifies Algeria as a highly attractive country for investment due to several factors, including its developed infrastructure of roads, railways, cargo ports, and regional airports, alongside a high level of education. Furthermore, Algeria functions as a strategic gateway to the African economic zone, benefiting from exceptionally favorable energy prices derived from its extensive domestic oil and gas production. The country also possesses substantial potential in renewable energy, attributed to its vast land area, abundant sunshine, and considerable wind resources across wide regions.

Algeria is actively working to solidify its position as a strategic partner for European investors, especially those from Germany, in areas such as renewable energy, green hydrogen, and energy conversion applications. Its geographic proximity to Europe, coupled with excellent solar and wind resources, low energy costs, and the potential for connection to the Southern Hydrogen Corridor project, collectively create a distinctive competitive environment. The legal framework enacted in 2022 governing investment, alongside the Algerian Agency for Investment Promotion, provides foreign investors with comprehensive guarantees, tax incentives, and a streamlined platform for procedural completion. The transfer of profits and capital is legally secure, and collaboration with national companies Sonatrach and Sonelgaz in related sectors is deemed crucial.

German companies, numbering over eighty operating in Algeria, have generally reported a satisfactory business environment, with reliable profit transfers executed without significant difficulties when official procedures are meticulously documented. This positive trend is underscored by the increasing Algerian-German economic and energy cooperation, notably demonstrated at the Algerian-German Economic Forum held in Berlin on July 17. The forum, conducted during the President's visit to Germany, facilitated the signing of numerous agreements and memoranda of understanding, particularly in energy and green hydrogen, reflecting a shared commitment to sustainable industrial partnerships and opening concrete new prospects for German companies in Algeria's green hydrogen development.
