Sukhoi Su-30 Deployment Supports Algeria’s Southern Interests

Algeria recently deployed four Sukhoi Su-30 fighter jets and a refueling aircraft to Niamey, Niger, following a request from the Nigerien government after a recent attempted rebellion. This military action is part of Algeria's broader strategy to safeguard its southern strategic depth and protect vital national interests. The deployment reflects a proactive stance on regional security, emphasizing the interconnectedness of stability across its borders.

The justification for this intervention is rooted in Algeria's 2020 constitutional amendment, which provides a framework for the state to act outside its territory when necessary, under specific institutional conditions. This amendment redefined national security, moving beyond a strict geographical line to acknowledge that threats like terrorism and regional instability do not respect borders. This strategic foresight allowed Algeria to build a framework for action and develop relations, enabling a swift and planned response to emerging crises in its neighborhood.

A key strategic interest underlying Algeria's engagement in Niger is the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline project, a continental initiative linking Nigeria, Niger, and Algeria to Europe. This project, stretching over 4,000 kilometers with a targeted capacity of approximately 30 billion cubic meters annually, represents a new African energy corridor crucial for Algeria's economic security. With Sonatrach officially launching construction of the Algerian section in Adrar on June 4th, Niger's stability is seen as integral to the project's overall security, making its safeguarding a critical component of Algeria's national interest.

Beyond direct economic and security concerns, Algeria's actions are also guided by its historical relations with neighboring countries and a commitment to regional stability, security, and the principle of good neighborliness. The deployment sends a clear political message that Algeria will not allow its strategic environment to become an open security vacuum, nor will its strategic projects be held hostage by chaos. This demonstrates Algeria's dedication to supporting sister states in difficult circumstances and asserting its role in shaping the future of its strategic surroundings.
