Off-Grid Solar, Wind Farm Initiatives Progress in Algeria
Algeria's Energy and Renewable Energies Minister, Mourad Adjal, recently chaired a meeting of the sectoral coordination commission, focusing on several key areas including solar energy, wind energy, and energy cooperation with African nations such as Chad, Benin, and Niger. The meeting, attended by central sector officials and high-ranking representatives from the Sonelgaz group, prioritized the launch of off-grid isolated solar unit operations, the realization of wind farm projects, and the monitoring of ongoing energy cooperation files.
Discussions regarding the implementation of isolated off-grid solar units included reviewing preparations, identifying priority zones and sites, and ensuring coordination among various concerned bodies and operators. A precise timeline was established for execution and field monitoring of these operations, with an emphasis on continuous oversight through all stages until the units are commissioned. For wind farm projects, attention was directed towards technical studies, identifying eligible sites, and completing necessary technical and regulatory procedures to facilitate project launch and accelerate their realization.
In the realm of energy cooperation, the commission monitored the progress of a 40-megawatt power plant project in N'Djamena, Chad, addressing technical and regulatory aspects and outlining measures to ensure its timely advancement. Bilateral energy cooperation with Benin involved tracking the implementation of agreed commitments and identifying priority areas for future collaboration. For Niger, the meeting assessed the progress of ongoing projects in Niamey and Agadez, aiming to strengthen bilateral energy cooperation and ensure the realization of mutually beneficial initiatives.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Minister Adjal issued a series of directives to ensure rigorous and effective follow-up on all discussed matters. These instructions included defining priority measures, setting clear execution deadlines, assigning responsibilities to relevant structures, and enhancing coordination among various departments, bodies, and operators. The minister also called for regular field monitoring of project stages and the establishment of an effective monitoring and evaluation mechanism, stressing the importance of continuous oversight and effective coordination to ensure the successful implementation of projects and commitments, thereby strengthening energy cooperation with partner countries.
