National Experts Drive Port Modernization Across Algeria
A presidential decision for the reorganization and specialization of national ports has entered its operational phase in Algeria, with Mostaganem Port designated as the first site for implementation. This new orientation is set to enhance Mostaganem's capacities for receiving, storing, and processing goods. As part of this, the Minister of Interior, Local Collectivities, and Transport, Saïd Sayoud, conducted a field visit to Mostaganem Port, where he inaugurated a new container storage platform and its associated berths. The minister stated that this marks the beginning of a broader transformation of the national port system.
The initiative aims to establish a more efficient organization for goods circulation, alleviate pressure on ports, and boost their overall performance and effectiveness within the national economic and logistical framework. According to the Minister, this approach is based on a better distribution of flows among port infrastructures, intended to reduce congestion, improve operational coordination, and align port capacities more closely with the needs of various economic operators. A specialized team will continue to develop a comprehensive strategy for port specialization across the East, West, and Central regions, striving for a more balanced distribution of goods traffic and sustained improvement in port efficiency.
Significant development and rehabilitation efforts at Mostaganem Port have included the completion of storage platforms covering nearly 10 hectares, with plans for an additional 5 hectares. Two new berths have also been constructed, and the dry dock, previously in disrepair, has been rehabilitated. Minister Sayoud praised the involvement of national expertise, noting that the work was carried out by Algerian experts and engineering firms, demonstrating the capability of national institutions to execute large-scale projects with high technical standards. Future plans for the port include the completion of a quay with a depth of at least 15 meters, enabling it to accommodate large vessels of 60,000 tons or more, thereby enhancing its competitiveness.
Alongside infrastructure upgrades, the port modernization project incorporates enhanced security measures and the implementation of a single-window system. The port's security fence and storage areas have been completed, and a surveillance camera system is planned to bolster monitoring capabilities. These efforts, which also involve using high-quality materials suited to the port environment, are designed to protect assets, goods, and personnel while improving overall operational conditions. The single-window project is considered a major advancement, aimed at simplifying procedures, reducing processing times and efforts, strengthening coordination among port entities, and ultimately improving service quality for economic operators and citizens.
