EU Delegation Launches “Joha” Series, Revitalizing Algerian Heritage

Prominent cultural events commenced in Algeria this week, marked by the launch of the animated series "Joha the Wonderful" by the European Union delegation. Held at Fantasia Land in Algiers, the evening brought together representatives from the cultural, business, and media sectors, alongside members of the diplomatic corps, all focused on innovatively highlighting cultural memory. This initiative introduces seven episodes in Algerian Arabic dialect, aiming to revive popular heritage with a contemporary approach.

The animated series features Joha's adventures across various Algerian regions, spanning from Ghardaia to the Casbah of Algiers, including Kabylie and Timimoun. The character of Joha is portrayed with a duality, appearing as both naive and wise, and delivers messages of tolerance, mutual respect, and coexistence through humorous narratives. The character's appeal extends beyond Algeria, with a presence in Mediterranean countries such as Italy, Egypt, Maghreb nations, Turkey, and the Balkans.

Complementing the animated series, young Algerian female artists presented a theatrical performance that reimagined Joha's world through contemporary female roles. This showcase underscored the emergence of a new generation of creative women who are reinterpreting folk tales and heritage symbols. Actresses like Noor Belil, who took on the role of a singer, and Hala Dissawi, portraying Joha's wife Kalima, both from the Youth House in Mazaffran Zeralda, participated in this enriching experience. These cultural endeavors collectively emphasize the importance of integrating digital and theatrical arts to engage younger generations with folk heritage, affirming the capacity of youth creativity to articulate concepts of coexistence and tolerance through sophisticated artistic expression.
