Date Production in Biskra Set to Exceed 4.1 Million Quintals
Agricultural services in Biskra province anticipate date production to exceed 4.1 million quintals for the 2026-2027 agricultural season. This forecast, provided by Lehbib Bousri, the Director of Agricultural Services, represents an increase of 100,000 quintals compared to the 2025-2026 season. This substantial output highlights the province's significant contribution to the national agricultural sector.
The highly sought-after Deglet Nour variety is expected to account for a significant portion of this production, with projections indicating 2.6 million quintals, which constitutes approximately 60% of the total date yield. Other varieties, including Ghars, Mech degla, and Degla beida, known for their early maturation, also contribute to the province's diverse date offerings. The harvest for early varieties has already commenced in several regions of the Ziban wilaya and is scheduled to continue until mid-October, with the Deglet Nour harvest to follow.
The projected increase in date quantities is largely attributed to the entry into production of new date palms planted in recent years. Furthermore, the date sector in Biskra has benefited from the expanded implementation of modern, water-efficient irrigation techniques and the enlargement of cultivated areas dedicated to date farming. Biskra province possesses a considerable resource of approximately 4 million date palms, which are sustained by groundwater and yield a wide array of date varieties, positioning the sector as a top agricultural priority for the region.
