Thirty New Accords Mark Algerian-German Partnership Progress
The Algerian-German economic partnership is entering a new phase following the signing of approximately 30 agreements during an economic forum held in Berlin last July. Both nations are now focused on implementing these accords through a dedicated roadmap, aiming to translate prior commitments into concrete projects across key sectors such as industry, health, energy, and technology.
To ensure effective follow-up on the outcomes of the Berlin meeting, the Algerian Economic Renewal Council (CREA) and the Algerian-German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (AHK Algeria) have agreed to develop a detailed plan of action. This decision was announced by CREA President Kamel Moula after a meeting that included AHK Algeria Director General Oliver Blank and German Ambassador Georg Felsheim. The discussions also involved evaluating the results of the Berlin Forum and examining methods to ensure the effective monitoring of commitments made by operators from both countries, particularly those formalized in the signed agreements.
The economic forum was held as part of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's official visit to Germany, gathering high-ranking officials and economic operators from both nations. The approximately 30 agreements encompass several strategic sectors. In the energy domain, a memorandum of understanding between Sonatrach and the German company VNG anticipates negotiations for renewing and increasing gas export volumes. The automotive sector saw a memorandum between Opel and the Halil Group, establishing a framework for cooperation and exploring new business and investment opportunities. Furthermore, the pharmaceutical sector includes an agreement between the Saidal Group and Boehringer Ingelheim for the local manufacturing of four strategic pharmaceutical molecules aimed at treating diabetes, heart failure, and renal diseases.
Other areas of cooperation include research and development, scientific collaboration, and strengthening biotechnology production capacities through an agreement between Frater Razes SPA and Groninger & Co. GmbH. The railway sector is also a target, with five memoranda of understanding signed between Siemens Mobility, SNTF, and the Algiers Metro Company, covering rail transport, urban mobility solutions, and the transfer of technology and expertise. The primary focus now is on the materialization of these agreements, with the action plan designed to structure the follow-up of partnerships and transition announced commitments into effective on-the-ground outcomes, giving the Algerian-German partnership a more operational dimension.
