Natural Gas Output Rises 4% for Algeria
Algerian natural gas production saw a 4% increase during the first seven months of 2026, reaching 62.621 billion cubic meters, up from 60.184 billion cubic meters in the same period of the previous year. According to data from the Joint Organisations Data Initiative (JODI), this significant growth was largely propelled by a strong rise in domestic electricity demand.
The escalating demand for natural gas in Algeria is particularly notable within the electricity generation sector. Natural gas consumption rose by approximately 7% to 33.149 billion cubic meters in the first seven months of 2026 compared to 30.942 billion cubic meters during the corresponding period in 2025. In July alone, consumption for electricity generation accounted for approximately 69% of the total gas consumed, reflecting record high demand for electricity which neared 21.4 thousand megawatts on July 13 and later reached 21.828 thousand megawatts on August 19.
While overall gas exports, including both pipeline and liquefied natural gas (LNG), saw a decrease in July, exports specifically through pipelines recorded growth, increasing to 3.184 billion cubic meters from 2.938 billion cubic meters in July of the previous year. This performance highlights Algeria's continued presence in international gas markets, with several countries exploring diverse supply sources. For instance, Bangladesh is considering importing 10 annual shipments of Algerian LNG under a short-term contract, according to sources cited by an energy research unit, with negotiations ongoing regarding prices, delivery dates, and supply conditions. Algerian LNG shipments during the period were also distributed to various European markets, including Turkey, Italy, France, and Spain.
