Niger Initiates Crucial Surveys for Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline

Niger will commence topographical surveys for the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) in early October. This initiative, announced by Nigerien Minister of Petroleum Hamadou Tini, aims to finalize the project's route within Nigerien territory. The surveys will be accompanied by essential environmental, impact, and geotechnical studies, preparing the ground for the Nigerien section of the pipeline that will link Nigerian gas resources to Algerian infrastructure.

This development follows a working visit by Algerian Minister of Hydrocarbons Mohamed Arkab to Niamey in late September, where discussions focused on the TSGP's progress and the necessity of expediting studies in Niger. Niamey seeks to harmonize its timeline with Algeria, which officially launched work on its 700-kilometer section in Aoulef, Adrar wilaya, on June 4. The 4,200-kilometer TSGP project is designed to transport up to 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually to Europe, with an updated feasibility study adopted by the three involved nations in June.

Beyond its role in gas transit, Niger views the TSGP as a catalyst for economic and industrial development, fostering electricity production, new industries, agricultural processing, and fertilizer production along its route. Niger has also expressed a strong desire to enhance its cooperation with Algeria across the entire hydrocarbon value chain, seeking Sonatrach's involvement from exploration to marketing. Niger considers Algeria a strategic partner, valuing its extensive experience in exploration, production, refining, and industrial activities, and emphasizing the importance of skill transfer and training for its engineers and technicians.
