Foreign Minister Attaf Holds Bilateral Talks in New York with Counterparts from Brotherly Nations

Algiers – Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Mr. Ahmed Attaf, held bilateral talks on Saturday in New York with several of his counterparts from brotherly nations. These discussions took place during his participation in the high-level segment of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, according to a statement from the ministry.

The statement indicated that Minister Attaf met with Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration, Mr. Badr Abdel Aty; Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ayman Safadi; Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Francophonie of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ms. Térèse Kahikwamba Wagner; and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of South Sudan, Mr. Ramadan Mohamed Abdullah Jok.

During his meeting with the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Mr. Attaf coordinated efforts to discuss key issues on the General Assembly’s agenda. The two also explored ways to rally Arab countries to generate stronger international support for the Palestinian cause. They further touched on upcoming bilateral and continental engagements.

In his talks with the Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister, Minister Attaf reviewed the developments in the Palestinian territories and the broader Middle East, especially in light of the ongoing genocide in Gaza and Israel’s escalatory policies across multiple fronts. The two ministers discussed strategies to strengthen international support for Palestine during the current UN General Assembly session and explored avenues to enhance Algerian-Jordanian relations in preparation for upcoming bilateral engagements.

Regarding his meeting with the Foreign Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the discussion focused on the crisis in the eastern region of the country and efforts to resolve it through peaceful means, especially in the context of the UN Security Council’s approach to the crisis. They also explored ways to deepen bilateral cooperation and exchanged views on key issues within the African Union.

As for the talks with South Sudan’s Foreign Minister, the conversation revolved around the internal situation in South Sudan and how Algeria could assist in supporting the country’s efforts to establish security and stability. This would include strengthening bilateral cooperation in capacity building and human resource development, as well as multilateral efforts, given Algeria’s position as a member of the UN Security Council and its role in the African Union High-Level Committee on South Sudan.
