Four Million Algerian Homes Gain Fiber Optic Access

Algeria has officially reached the milestone of connecting four million households to fiber optic to the home (FTTH) technology. The achievement was celebrated at the headquarters of Algerie Telecom by the Minister of Post and Telecommunications, with key officials from the sector, technical teams, and media representatives in attendance. This represents a substantial increase from just 53,000 subscriptions recorded in June 2020, with the network experiencing exceptional growth, connecting 1.4 million households in the first nine months of 2026 alone.
This significant expansion of the national fiber optic network has also brought about a notable improvement in the affordability of internet services. The monthly subscription cost for speeds of 100 megabits per second or higher has seen a 76% reduction, decreasing from DZD 9,999 in 2020 to DZD 2,400. This progress is aligned with the President's strategic vision to develop infrastructure and enhance services, creating broader opportunities for students through digital learning, improving competitiveness for businesses, and bringing administrative services closer to citizens. Fiber optic technology is considered a foundational element for digital public services, economic diversification, and digital sovereignty, paving the way for future applications in areas like digital education, cloud services, and artificial intelligence.
Looking ahead, Algeria aims to exceed 4.4 million fiber optic subscriptions before the close of 2026, with an additional 300,000 households targeted for connection during the first quarter of 2027. These efforts coincide with the ongoing transition from copper networks to fiber optics and the continuous development of both international connectivity capabilities and national access networks. The Minister affirmed that service quality and citizen satisfaction remain paramount, extending appreciation to Algerie Telecom employees, technical teams, 4,400 subcontracting companies, and local authorities for their contributions to this national project, which is viewed as a crucial step towards universal connectivity and maximizing opportunities.
