Gaza – Palestinian Minister of Health, Majed Abu Ramadan, announced the launch of the second round of the polio vaccination campaign in the Gaza Strip, set to begin on Monday. This round targets children under the age of ten.

The vaccination campaign will be carried out in three phases. The first phase will take place in the central region, starting in Deir al-Balah, and will last for three days. The second phase will focus on the governorates of Khan Younis and Rafah, while the third phase will cover Gaza and northern Gaza governorates, running from October 22 to 25.

The campaign aims to vaccinate a total of 591,700 children under the age of ten. Both fixed and mobile medical teams will be deployed to ensure the successful execution of the campaign.

The Ministry of Health emphasized that the success of this vaccination drive depends on the continuation of the humanitarian ceasefire. This would allow healthcare workers to operate in a secure environment, enabling families to safely access vaccinations for their children.

The first round of the polio vaccination campaign was successfully conducted from September 1 to 12, in partnership with the Palestinian Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), and other partners. This initiative was part of urgent efforts to halt the spread of polio in Gaza, which was detected on July 16, 2024, following the spread of diseases in displacement shelters and schools due to the ongoing Israeli aggression against Gaza, now in its second year.

The Israeli occupation continues its genocidal war against the Palestinian people in Gaza, disregarding the UN Security Council’s orders for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) directives to implement measures to prevent genocide and improve the dire humanitarian situation in the region.

Since the Israeli assault began on October 7, 2023, a total of 42,175 Palestinians have been martyred, with 98,336 others injured, most of them women and children. The death toll is not yet final, as thousands remain missing under the rubble.
