
Algiers – Algeria’s Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, held a meeting on Thursday with Natasha Van Rijn, the UNDP’s Resident Representative in Algeria, at the ministry’s headquarters. The meeting was attended by senior officials from the ministry and focused on evaluating and enhancing the existing cooperation between Algeria and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The discussions highlighted the progress of joint initiatives, particularly in partnership with the National Agency for the Promotion and Rationalization of Energy Use (APRUE). Key areas of collaboration included technical support and the exchange of expertise on projects aimed at improving energy efficiency and advancing the country’s energy transition.
Both parties also explored expanding cooperation to encompass renewable energy sectors, such as solar photovoltaics and wind energy, as well as the development of green hydrogen. They discussed green hydrogen’s potential as a sustainable energy alternative to reduce the carbon footprint of the industrial sector. In addition, they emphasized promoting clean and sustainable transportation solutions to further Algeria’s goal of lowering emissions.
Focus on Sustainable Development and Regional Cooperation
During the meeting, Van Rijn expressed her satisfaction with the discussions, noting the importance of Algeria’s initiatives in energy transition and renewable energy development. She praised the country’s efforts to create a new and sustainable energy model, which aligns with its national energy policies and supports broader environmental goals.
Van Rijn also highlighted the importance of Algeria’s ambitions in regional cooperation, particularly in working with African countries to promote clean energy solutions. She reaffirmed the UNDP’s commitment to intensify its collaboration with Algeria, focusing on energy governance models, energy efficiency, and sustainable development.
The meeting concluded with both parties expressing their willingness to continue strengthening their partnership, especially in areas such as energy transition, green energy solutions, and innovative governance strategies to support Algeria’s efforts in reducing its carbon footprint.
