Algiers – Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts, Mokhtar Didouche, underscored the critical role of investment in driving the growth of Algeria’s tourism sector, particularly in regions with significant potential to become standout tourist destinations.
Speaking during a public session in the National People’s Assembly (APN), where several ministers addressed oral questions from deputies, Didouche responded to inquiries about supporting tourism investments in key areas such as Algiers, Ghardaia, Mostaganem, M’Sila, and Oran. The minister emphasized that the government’s goal is to promote diverse forms of tourism, including coastal, desert, thermal, and eco-tourism, by developing and preparing tourism expansion zones to make them accessible to investors.
Ghardaia’s Untapped Tourism Potential
The minister highlighted that Ghardaia offers a wealth of tourism opportunities, boasting four tourism expansion zones spanning 277 hectares. He stressed the importance of leveraging these assets to attract investors and elevate the region as a key destination in the country’s tourism strategy.
Addressing Infrastructure Gaps and Lowering Costs
Didouche also emphasized the need to expand tourism projects across the mentioned regions to address shortfalls in accommodation facilities and reduce prices to make tourism more accessible and attractive. He acknowledged the existing infrastructure gaps and reiterated the importance of improving these areas to meet the growing expectations of visitors.
Revitalizing Historic Sites for Eco-Tourism
The minister discussed efforts to restore historic palaces (qsours) and farms (houache) located within agricultural zones of Algiers. In collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, the tourism ministry is working to rehabilitate these sites and incorporate them into the national tourism program. “These efforts will play a key role in promoting eco-tourism, offering visitors sustainable experiences that align with Algeria’s cultural and environmental heritage,” said Didouche.
The session concluded with the minister reaffirming the government’s commitment to fostering investment, enhancing tourism infrastructure, and promoting sustainable tourism models that align with the country’s long-term economic goals.
