Algiers – The Chinese Cultural Week kicked off on Thursday evening at the Boualem Bessaïh Opera House in Algiers, marking an important cultural event that celebrates 65 years of Algerian-Chinese friendship. This event highlights China’s rich traditions and cultural creativity, offering Algerians a glimpse into the heritage of one of East Asia’s most influential civilizations.
Held over October 24-25, 2024, the festival takes place under the patronage of Minister of Culture and Arts, Soraya Mouloudji, with a carefully curated program to showcase the artistic diversity and cultural richness of China.
A Night of Cultural Exchange and Artistry
The opening ceremony brought together diplomatic representatives from China, prominent Algerian cultural officials, and local artists. Among the distinguished attendees was Ismail Inzarn, Director of Cultural and Artistic Production at the Ministry of Culture and Arts, representing Minister Soraya Mouloudji.
The event offered the audience a range of Chinese cultural displays, aimed at strengthening the bonds of friendship and promoting cultural ties between the two nations. Several of these captivating performances also took place in public spaces across Algiers, allowing a wider audience to engage with Chinese artistry.
Exhibitions, Traditional Music, and Dance Performances
A cultural exhibition-sale was set up in the foyer of the Boualem Bessaïh Opera House, featuring Chinese handicrafts and traditional art pieces. Visitors had the chance to explore displays of contemporary designs, traditional Chinese dances, and folk music, reflecting the artistic ingenuity of both classical and modern Chinese culture.
During the performances, the audience was treated to musical pieces featuring the Erhu (a traditional Chinese violin) and the flute, performed by two talented musicians. The audience was also delighted by an emotional rendition of the Algerian classic “Ya Rayeh” by the late Dahmane El Harrachi, which sparked enthusiastic applause and engagement from attendees.
Stunning Dance and Martial Arts Performances
The event continued with a series of dance and martial arts shows, blending Chinese heritage with Algerian talent. Highlights included a performance titled “Chinese Embroidery,” featuring eight dancers elegantly manipulating embroidered hoops, and a Kung Fu Wushu demonstration by a Chinese duo and Algerian martial artist Haitham Qabes. Another crowd favorite was the mesmerizing “Long-Sleeve Puppet Dance”.
Other captivating performances followed, with evocative titles such as “Springtime March,” “Kung Shu,” and “Songs of the Chinese People.” The display of changing facial expressions—a unique element of Chinese opera—proved to be a show-stopping act. The evening concluded with a joyful performance titled “Dance of Life and Happiness,” leaving the audience in awe.
