Chinese Nuclear Delegation Explores Medical Technology Cooperation with Algeria

Algiers, October 27, 2024 – A high-level delegation from the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), led by Vice President Qiao Gang, met with officials from Algeria’s Ministry of Energy and Mines on Sunday to explore opportunities for bilateral cooperation in nuclear technology, particularly in medical applications.

According to a statement from the ministry, the Chinese delegation was received by Abdelkarim Aouissi, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Energy and Mines, in the presence of Abdelhamid Mellah, Commissioner for Atomic Energy, alongside senior ministry officials.

Focus on Medical Nuclear Technology and Cancer Treatment

The discussions centered on “enhancing Algerian-Chinese cooperation in the use of nuclear technology, especially in medical diagnostics and imaging procedures,” the ministry noted. The two sides also discussed an ongoing project to produce radiopharmaceuticals for cancer treatment at the Birine Nuclear Research Center (CNRB) in Djelfa. This initiative aligns with Algeria’s efforts to leverage nuclear technologies for medical use and improve healthcare outcomes.

Strengthening Nuclear Cooperation for Peaceful Applications

The meeting also reviewed the status of ongoing collaboration between Algeria’s Atomic Energy Commission and CNNC in the field of nuclear energy, emphasizing peaceful applications. Both sides expressed their intent to deepen cooperation by developing a joint action plan tailored to Algeria’s current needs in nuclear science and technology, particularly in the fight against cancer.

Discussions further highlighted the potential for knowledge exchange and collaborative solutions through the formation of specialized working groups. These groups will focus on various aspects of nuclear energy, both active and non-active applications, with the goal of advancing peaceful nuclear technologies and addressing mutual priorities.

This meeting underscores Algeria’s commitment to fostering strategic partnerships with China in advanced technologies and promoting innovative solutions in healthcare and nuclear energy.
