Algiers – Algeria’s Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, will participate in the ministerial meeting of the Global Fusion Energy Group under the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Rome on Wednesday. This announcement was made in a statement released by the Ministry of Energy and Mines on Tuesday.
Minister Arkab will be accompanied by Algeria’s ambassador to Italy, as well as the President and CEO of Sonelgaz and the Commissioner of Atomic Energy (COMENA), the statement added.
This high-level meeting, to be held at Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, will be co-chaired by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi. The event will gather politicians, representatives from member states, scientists, researchers, executives from leading energy firms, entrepreneurs, and investors.
According to the ministry, the aim of the meeting is to “exchange insights on strategies for accelerating the development and testing of fusion energy, and to discuss priority issues related to policy frameworks, financial structures, technological advancements, commercial marketing pathways, and international cooperation to foster the development of this promising technology as a low-carbon energy source essential for global growth.”
Several sessions will take place under themes such as “Fusion Energy: Current Status and Future Outlook” and “Global Cooperation and Public-Private Partnerships: Paving the Way for Nuclear Fusion Energy,” highlighting the progress in the fusion energy field, public and private sector initiatives, as well as international partnerships and infrastructure advancements.
The statement also noted that the Italian government, in its capacity as chair of the G7 for 2024, is emphasizing the development of fusion energy technology and research. It aims to address global challenges related to energy security and economic growth, committing to advancing fusion energy research on the international stage.
