Today, in a significant step for Algeria’s mining sector, Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arakab, officially appointed Belkacem Soltani as the new Chairman and CEO of SONAREM, the National Mining Company, replacing Mohammed Sakher Harami. The appointment ceremony took place at the Ministry of Energy and Mines headquarters in Algiers, attended by SONAREM’s board, general assembly members, key figures in the mining and energy sectors, as well as the heads of the National Mining Activities Agency (ANAM) and the Geological Service Agency of Algeria (ASGA).
Minister Arakab highlighted that the appointment of Soltani aligns with Algeria’s strategic vision of revitalizing the mining sector by advancing SONAREM’s projects, particularly major initiatives such as the Gara Djebilet iron mine, the zinc and lead project in Tala Hamza-Oued Amizour, and the integrated phosphate project in Bled El-Hadba and Oued Kebrit. These projects are expected to enhance Algeria’s mining footprint both regionally and internationally.
Having served on SONAREM’s board since 2019, Soltani brings continuity to the leadership, a critical factor in the ongoing execution of Algeria’s key mining projects. Minister Arakab emphasized the strategic role SONAREM plays in the national economic landscape, focusing on developing Algeria’s mineral resources from extraction through processing, thereby supporting economic growth and diversification.
In a statement, the Minister expressed his appreciation to the outgoing CEO, Harami, acknowledging his efforts, especially in launching several foundational projects. Arakab further urged the new CEO to bring a clear vision to SONAREM, emphasizing Algeria’s international position in the mining sector and assuring Soltani of full support from the Ministry and sector experts to meet SONAREM’s goals.
In his remarks, Soltani expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him, pledging to mobilize resources and skills within SONAREM to achieve the organization’s goals and contribute to Algeria’s overall economic prosperity.
The Ministry also highlighted Soltani’s 32 years of experience in the mining industry, with 23 years as a senior manager in public enterprises. He holds a master’s degree in mining engineering and has accumulated valuable technical expertise and leadership, including his work with FERPHOS and SGP SOMINES. His background combines deep technical knowledge of mining with proven administrative capabilities in overseeing major projects and navigating industrial transformations.
