Algiers – On Saturday morning, various mosques across Algeria hosted the Salat al-Istisqa (rain prayer), as citizens and worshippers sought divine mercy and relief from the persistent drought affecting many regions of the country. The prayer was performed as an act of supplication to Allah, asking for His mercy in sending rain to nourish the land and its people.
The Salat al-Istisqa is a highly recommended practice in Islam, following the tradition of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who is known to have performed this prayer during times of drought. The prayer consists of two Rak’ahs (units of prayer), followed by a sermon delivered by the imam. The imams who led the prayers emphasized the importance of showing gratitude to Allah for His blessings and encouraged the congregation to increase their acts of worship, including remembrance (dhikr), good deeds, and seeking forgiveness (istighfar). They also prayed for the well-being of the country, its security, and stability, asking for the same for all Muslim nations.
In a statement, Algeria’s Ministry of Religious Affairs and Endowments urged the public to perform the rain prayer today, Saturday, as a response to the ongoing drought affecting several provinces across the nation. The ministry also highlighted that this prayer is a means of fulfilling the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who would lead the community in prayer whenever drought struck.
The ministry’s statement called on citizens to increase their supplications to Allah, emphasizing the spiritual duties associated with the Salat al-Istisqa. These include repentance, seeking forgiveness, restoring any wrongs, maintaining family ties, fasting, and giving charity to the poor and needy. This collective act of worship is intended not only to seek divine mercy but also to strengthen social solidarity and empathy within the community.
The call for the prayer came amid growing concerns from the public, who have expressed their desire to see tangible action taken in response to the widespread drought. The ministry’s message also highlighted the importance of maintaining hope and trust in Allah’s plan, even during times of hardship.
