Algiers – The National Economic, Social, and Environmental Council (CNESE) has initiated a strategic foresight study projecting Algeria’s economic outlook by 2062. This effort aims to address major challenges facing the national economy and explore mechanisms for sustainable economic and social growth, according to the Council’s President, Rabia Kherfi, in a statement made on Tuesday.
Speaking during a hearing before the National People’s Assembly’s Economic, Development, Industry, Commerce, and Planning Committee, chaired by Mohamed Hanouni, Ms. Kherfi stated that the study’s goal is to “lay the foundations for a strong state capable of navigating future transformations by 2062, marking 100 years since Algeria’s independence.”
In her presentation, Ms. Kherfi highlighted the pivotal role of the CNESE in implementing national economic development policies and coordinating with various bodies to keep pace with global economic changes.
The Council serves as a platform for national consultation on development policies, fostering dialogue among economic and social stakeholders, evaluating economic, social, and environmental issues, and providing actionable recommendations to the government.
Ms. Kherfi described the Council as a “distinguished advisory institution within Algeria’s decision-making framework, renowned for producing high-quality and precise strategic reports and studies.” These reports are prepared either upon direct commission from public authorities or through the Council’s independent initiatives and are submitted to public authorities for action.
This year, the Council has completed several strategic studies, including reforms of the tax and banking systems, public service improvements, governance of public institutions, and private tutoring practices.
In addition to its annual foresight report, the Council has also issued periodic reports on various topics to ensure broad dissemination of data and indicators, Ms. Kherfi added.
During the session, the Committee Chairman, Mohamed Hanouni, commended the Council’s advisory role in shaping economic policies, noting that it “contributes to fostering the democratic practices advocated by the President of the Republic, which emphasize the inclusion of economic actors, social partners, and civil society.”
Mr. Hanouni also congratulated Ms. Kherfi for her efforts, particularly in revitalizing the activities of the Arab Economic and Social Councils Union and establishing its headquarters in Algiers.
During discussions, lawmakers raised several issues, including diversifying the national economy, addressing the informal market, the Council’s perspective on social support policies, tackling drug-related challenges, waste management, technological advancements, and envisioning economic recovery strategies.
