Beijing’s Heritage Offers Model for Algerian Architecture Student

Elalia, an Algerian PhD student specializing in architecture at Beijing University of Architecture, is exploring the capital's rich cultural and historical landscape. During her first National Day holiday in Beijing, she embarked on a cultural journey focused on the city's Central Axis, including the iconic Bell and Drum Towers. Having been captivated by Beijing's Central Axis even before her arrival, Elalia expressed a keen interest in understanding the city's growth and the daily lives of its people by tracing this 'ancient capital's backbone.' As an architecture student, she is drawn to places where history can be discerned through buildings, marveling at the sense of order and continuity, and the centuries-old traditional Chinese architecture that 'coexists' with the modern urban environment.

Her exploration extended through Shichahai, Yandai Xiejie, and Di'anmen Outer Street, immersing her in the vibrant daily life of ancient Beijing. Elalia observed how historical buildings and traditional alleyways pulse with vitality, remarking on the feeling of 'time travel' when people in traditional attire pass by ancient structures. She found a deep resonance with these scenes, noting that her home country, Algeria, experiences similar cultural integration during festivals, where historical districts blend with daily activities, and people wear traditional clothing while enjoying local cuisine. This experience revealed to her that Beijing is more than just the high-rise buildings and modern infrastructure she initially imagined, appreciating the city's unique 'contrast' between ancient and contemporary.

Elalia's doctoral research directly relates to the protection and revival of historical buildings and traditional craftsmanship in Algeria. She views Beijing itself as an exemplary case study, believing that 'we can learn a lot from China's experience in balancing historical heritage with modern urban development.' Beyond academics, she values Beijing's vitality, the warmth of its people, the convenience of its subway system, and the city's overall orderliness. Elalia now enjoys exploring Beijing's diverse districts and plans to invite her family and friends to experience the city's historical architecture, efficient public transport, and cuisine, eagerly anticipating the opportunity to rediscover Beijing through their eyes.
