Luca Zidane Chooses Algeria, Citing National Pride

Luca Zidane, the 28-year-old son of football icon Zinédine Zidane, has officially committed to representing Algeria on the international stage. This decision marks a significant moment for the goalkeeper, as he forges his own international path under the Algerian colors, departing from his earlier appearances with various French youth national teams.

Zidane's choice is deeply rooted in his familial heritage and a strong sense of national pride. He stated that the decision was driven by "the attachment we have, our family, and the love we have for Algeria," emphasizing that "we have an Algerian culture since childhood." This connection was reportedly passed down through his paternal grandparents, particularly his grandfather Smaïl, who hails from Kabylie.

Before making his commitment, Luca Zidane engaged in discussions with the Algerian national team coach and the Algerian Football Federation, indicating a thoughtful and considered process. He expressed his longstanding interest in joining the Algerian team, stating, "It's a pride to be able to play and defend your country." Zidane further conveyed the profound emotion he experiences when wearing the Algerian jersey and hearing the national anthem. At 27 years old, he had obtained authorization from FIFA to change his sporting nationality to represent Algeria, following a history of playing for French youth teams from the U16 to U20 categories, with his last French youth match in March 2018. He was never called to the French senior team.
