Condé Nast Traveler Features Algerian Sahara as Next Adventure

The American travel magazine Condé Nast Traveler has published a report on November 3, 2026, highlighting the tourism potential of Algeria's Sahara. Titled “Why the Algerian Sahara Should Be Your Next Off-Grid Adventure,” the article by journalist Heather Richardson details a nine-day journey through Djanet and the Tassili n’Ajjer region. The report emphasizes the immense landscapes, the tranquil desert environment, and the rich natural and historical heritage found within the Tassili n’Ajjer.

Richardson's experience, organized by British tour operator Explore Worldwide, showcased the region's appeal for adventurous travelers. The itinerary included discovering diverse sites such as rocky plateaus, canyons, sandstone formations, and sand dunes, with a focus on the significant archaeological heritage. The Tassili n’Ajjer is home to at least 15,000 ancient rock art representations, some dating back nearly 10,000 years, depicting ancient lifestyles, hunting scenes, dances, and animals. The journey also observed the presence of Tuareg nomadic camels and highlighted the peace of the desert, as the group encountered only six other vehicles during five days in the area. Security measures for travel in the region involve guides communicating planned itineraries, traveler identities, and vehicle registrations to military authorities.

This international spotlight aligns with Algeria's broader objectives to develop its tourism sector and diversify national revenue streams, aiming to quadruple visitor numbers by 2030. Initiatives like the visa on arrival scheme for travelers focusing their stay on the Sahara have supported this growth, benefiting approximately 39,000 visitors since its introduction in 2023. Beyond the natural beauty, the report also acknowledges the warm reception from local residents and the dedication of local tourism professionals, including Djanet guide Aissa Khirani, who advocates for sustainable tourism development that preserves the desert's character while benefiting local communities.

While the report praises the unique experience, it notes that development in accommodation and infrastructure, such as new hotel projects, is ongoing to support the anticipated increase in visitors. Explore Worldwide offers a nine-day Algerian Sahara circuit starting from $2,410, covering accommodation and most meals, with practical advice from the magazine suggesting visitors carry foreign currency due to limited card payment options and advising against importing drones or binoculars.
