Czech Republic, France, Germany Seek More Algerian Gas
Three European countries, the Czech Republic, France, and Germany, are moving to increase their gas imports from Algeria, reinforcing Algeria's position as a secure and reliable energy supplier amidst global market shifts.

Three European nations, the Czech Republic, France, and Germany, are actively pursuing increased gas imports from Algeria. This movement aims to diversify their energy sources and secure supply needs amidst ongoing transformations in the European gas market. The actions underscore Algeria's growing prominence as a vital energy partner on the continent.
The Czech Republic's government office announced its desire to double contracted gas quantities with Algeria, seeking to raise annual imports from 200 million cubic meters to 400 million cubic meters. This follows a 2024 contract between Czech energy company ČEZ and Sonatrach, and initial commitments from Algerian officials to expand the agreement. Meanwhile, France has requested an expedited increase in oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments from Algeria to bolster its energy security. Germany is also set to receive additional gas volumes through an agreement between Sonatrach and its German counterpart VNG, with implementation planned to begin on January 1, 2027. This latter agreement was signed during President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's official visit to Berlin in July 2026.
Algeria's strategic position in the European gas market is reinforced by its extensive pipeline network connecting directly to Southern Europe and its robust liquefied natural gas export facilities. Data indicates Algeria's share of total European Union gas imports, through both pipelines and LNG, has consistently ranged between 13 and 14 percent over the past four years. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in an address read at the 8th Gas Exporting Countries Forum Summit, affirmed Algeria's unwavering commitment as a "safe and reliable supplier," emphasizing its consistency in honoring international agreements, even during challenging market periods.
