Kansas Community Delegation Embarks on Expense-Paid Algeria Visit

An expense-paid trip to Algeria awaits thirty-eight residents from Lawrence, Kansas, next week, following an official invitation from the Algerian Embassy. This initiative serves as a direct expression of gratitude from Algeria, recognizing Lawrence's hospitality when the Algerian national football team made the city its base during the recent World Cup. The delegation is scheduled to visit Algeria from Monday, November 9, to Friday, November 14.

The invitations, which arrived in mailboxes of city leaders, local businesses, community members, students, and University of Kansas (KU) faculty, were confirmed by Mayor Brad Finkeldei, who noted the surprise and profound meaning of the gesture. Mayor Finkeldei described the opportunity as a "trip of a lifetime," highlighting the generosity of the Algerian Embassy, which has covered all flights, hotels, and excursions for the travelers.

Among the attendees are Christopher Johnson, interim dean of music at KU, and six KU students. Johnson expressed appreciation for the Algerian team's acknowledgement of the welcome extended by Lawrence residents, particularly the efforts of the KU Band Department, whose students learned and performed the Algerian national anthem for the team's first practice. Ruth DeWitt, a representative for Explore Lawrence who assisted in announcing the team's home base choice, will also join the group, underscoring the community-wide involvement in fostering positive international relations.
