Speaking at the 29th Algiers International Book Fair, author Yasmina Khadra presented his novel "Le Prieur de Bethléem" and delivered a powerful critique of global silence on Palestine.

Speaking at a literary panel in the Tahar-Ouettar hall during the 29th Algiers International Book Fair (SILA), acclaimed author Yasmina Khadra presented his latest novel "Le Prieur de Bethléem" published by Casbah Éditions, delivering a compelling critique of the Palestinian tragedy and the moral duty of intellectuals.
Addressing a large audience gathered from across the country, the author explained the symbolic and narrative choices behind his new work, written to capture the depth of the Palestinian plight. He emphasized the need for a literary approach that breaks through international indifference and confronts what he described as a failing global moral order. Highlighting the publishing challenges linked to such topics, Khadra noted that the novel has so far been translated in only five countries including Italy, Spain, Mexico, Iraq, and Uzbekistan due to hesitation from certain Western publishers.
The writer strongly denounced Zionist ideology and the escalation of extremism, warning against a destructive rhetoric that contradicts core spiritual principles. Condemning global silence over the crisis in Gaza, he stressed that indifference jeopardizes human dignity everywhere and called for an urgent awakening of global consciousness to end the suffering.
Regarding his view of Western nations, the novelist made a clear distinction between political leadership and general populations. While reiterating his appreciation for his worldwide readership, particularly in France, he lamented how political interests often overshadow human rights. Concluding his address on a resilient note, Khadra urged young writers and artists to dedicate their craft to promoting beauty, empathy, and human solidarity in times of global crisis.
