Medical teams at the Public Hospital of Ksar El Boukhari in Médéa have achieved a significant medical success, saving the life of a 23-year-old patient admitted in critical condition. The young man, who has diabetes, was suffering from Fournier's gangrene, a severe infection that had rapidly compromised his health, affecting his urinary and genital systems before spreading to the thigh region. His prognosis was directly threatened by the infection's progression and associated complications, which included severe sepsis, diabetic ketoacidosis, and acute renal failure.
Faced with this emergency, a multidisciplinary approach involving repeated surgical interventions was necessary to control the infection and preserve the patient's life. Dr. Abdelhak Yahiaoui, a specialist in urological surgery at the hospital, led the surgical team. The protocol involved extensive removal of necrotized tissues and surgical incisions to alleviate pressure and limit the infection's spread to the thigh and left inguinal region. These intensive interventions were performed approximately every 48 hours over a three-week period, aiming to manage the aggressive progression of the gangrene and prevent further complications.
The concerted efforts of the medical teams led to a progressive and significant improvement in the patient's health. The treatment successfully restored his renal functions, corrected the diabetic ketoacidosis, stabilized biological parameters, and brought the severe sepsis under control. Crucially, the doctors also managed to preserve the young man's urinary and genital systems. After three weeks of intensive care and successive surgical procedures, the patient was discharged from the surgical ward in stable condition, with plans to continue his care in plastic and reconstructive surgery for aesthetic reconstruction. This accomplishment underscores the high level of local medical expertise and the effectiveness of rapid, coordinated specialized interventions within Algerian public health institutions.
