President Abdelmadjid Tebboune recently emphasized the need for a global cultural and artistic renaissance to complement Algeria's ongoing economic development. Attending the inaugural concert of the International Philharmonic Orchestra of Algeria at the Boualem Bessaieh Opera, held in commemoration of the 72nd anniversary of the 1st November 1954 Revolution, President Tebboune underscored the strategic importance of restoring Algeria's historical and cultural prominence. He issued direct instructions for the orchestra's mission, aiming to promote Algerian music internationally.
The International Philharmonic Orchestra, established by presidential decision, comprises 100 professional musicians and 40 choral singers under the direction of Maestro Amine Kouider. Its composition reflects an international dimension, including 70 Algerian musicians from both within the country and the diaspora, alongside 30 foreign musicians representing 12 nations such as Cuba, Venezuela, South Africa, Russia, China, Spain, Italy, Germany, Egypt, Tunisia, and Lebanon. The project is designed to reintroduce Algerian musical heritage through orchestral and symphonic arrangements, leveraging its distinctive colors, maqams, and rhythms in new artistic forms to broaden its appeal on international stages and enrich local audiences with global musical experiences.
Beyond the main orchestra, a Youth Orchestra Academy is slated for launch in December, selecting 60 talented musicians to serve as an auxiliary group benefiting from intensive training by Algerian and international experts. This initiative is supported by Algeria's existing musical training network, which includes the National Institute of Music, five regional institutes, 17 annexes, and 45 culture houses. Furthermore, preparations are underway for “National Sessions for the Reform of Musical Training” to advance artistic education and create professional pathways for young talents. Proposals also include the re-establishment of the Algerian National Ballet, which was dissolved in 2016, to foster training, production, and development of Algerian choreography while engaging with international experiences.
The orchestra's first performance, titled “Algeria, Symphony of Immortality,” honored the nation and the martyrs of the Liberation Revolution. Planned activities for the ensemble include nationwide tours, extending to southern cities, and international tours to various world capitals. These tours, combined with a knowledge program of lectures on Algerian history and museum visits, collectively aim to project Algerian culture and identity more widely, integrating artistic expression directly with national development goals.
