Global Mayors Dialogue Features Algiers’ Heritage, Urban Strategy

The Wilaya of Alger recently participated in the Global Mayors Dialogue, held from October 9 to 11 in Luoyang, China, within the Henan province. Represented by Nachida Belahouène, the delegated wali of the Draria administrative district, on behalf of the Minister and Wali of Alger, Mohamed Abdenour Rabehi, the capital showcased its strategic approaches and experiences. The international gathering focused on "Preserving the cultural heritage of ancient historical capitals and promoting mutual learning between urban civilizations," bringing together city representatives to discuss heritage safeguarding and urban development.
During the thematic workshops, Alger's representative highlighted the extensive efforts undertaken to protect and enhance the capital's tangible and intangible cultural heritage. Special emphasis was placed on the Casbah of Alger, recognized as a significant site of memory and a primary historical and cultural symbol of the city. Its preservation is deemed crucial for transmitting Algerian patrimonial identity to future generations. Furthermore, the delegation outlined Algiers' strategic vision for urban development and modernization, detailing projects and objectives established by local authorities, including initiatives under the "Plan Blanc" aimed at improving living conditions, redeveloping urban spaces, and boosting the capital's attractiveness. These efforts are part of a broader drive to modernize Alger, enhance its urban environment, and meet the demands of sustainable urban growth.
Beyond presenting its achievements and projects, Alger's participation also underscored a significant diplomatic and partnership dimension. This engagement is aligned with the re-launch of the twinning agreement between the Wilaya of Alger and China's Henan province. The collaboration seeks to strengthen relations between Algerian and Chinese local authorities, opening new avenues for exchange in areas such as city management, urban planning, and infrastructure modernization. It further aims to facilitate the sharing of experiences and expertise, as well as the identification of best practices that can contribute to the development of both territories. Through its involvement in the Dialogue, the Wilaya of Alger aims to solidify its international cooperation, benefiting from global experiences in urban governance, heritage preservation, and sustainable development, ultimately balancing historical legacy with modernization needs for its inhabitants.
