Sahrawi Self-Determination: Algeria Reaffirms Unwavering UN Support

Algeria reiterated its unwavering commitment to a just and lasting resolution for Western Sahara, founded on the Sahrawi people's inalienable right to self-determination. Speaking before the Fourth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, Amar Bendjama, Algeria's Permanent Representative to the UN, emphasized that no entity, not even the UN Security Council, possesses the authority to grant sovereignty over the territory. He underscored that sovereignty rightfully belongs to the Sahrawi people, who must be consulted regarding their future.

The Algerian representative highlighted that Western Sahara remains an unresolved issue of decolonization, with its legal status affirmed by the United Nations, which lists it as a non-self-governing territory. This legal standing is further supported by UN General Assembly Resolutions 1514 and 1541, and an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice, all of which enshrine the principle that a territory's political status must arise from the free will of its people. Algeria participated as an observer in direct negotiations between Morocco and the Polisario Front earlier this year, under the joint auspices of the United Nations and the United States, alongside Mauritania. In this context, reports indicate the Sahrawi people's resolve to pursue their struggle for independence through all legitimate means. Mr. Bendjama warned against calls for Sahrawis to abandon their aspirations for freedom and dignity in favor of accepting a predetermined outcome.

Algeria also drew attention to the majority of the Sahrawi people who live as refugees in Algeria, Mauritania, and other locations, noting their recognized status, protection under international conventions, and right to international assistance. Mr. Bendjama urged member states to maintain their support and protection for these refugees while awaiting a just political resolution to the conflict. He cautioned against any politicization of humanitarian aid, stressing that the true solution lies in addressing the root causes of conflicts through negotiation and diplomacy, rather than reducing the count of refugees requiring assistance. Algeria concluded by reiterating its commitment to international and humanitarian law, and its dedication to achieving a just solution in Western Sahara that meets the aspirations of its people and contributes to regional peace and harmony.
